I hate exercising. I should rephrase that. I hate typical exercise. You know what I mean. Stuff like lifting weights, stair steppers, treadmills, those scary machines, aerobics, jazzercise, and pretty much all the stuff you see at the typical "gym."

And that is the other part of it. Every gym in my neck of the woods feels like you can not enter until you are fit and trim. So yours truly who has a long way to go would feel very out of place until I was a total lean mean D machine.

Of course being a "born again diabetic" I know that exercise needs and should be a part of my daily routine. So how do I make the non-existent gym rat in my come out?

Simple, I find something that I actually like to do and run with that!

I know that it seems obvious that the only exercise routine you will stuck with is the one you like but finding one you like is not easy. Well I found my own routine. I know when you think of exercise you do not think about throwing a Frisbee around, but I do!

Yes friends I am a Disc Golfer. I know it sounds ridiculous but I actually get about a two hour strenuous walk in every few days which I love and I have fun doing it! A few buddies and I meet up after work and early on Saturday mornings at a park in our area and play 18 holes of disc golf.

The game works like regular golf as far as objective and scoring but just imagine that instead of a golf ball and club, you throw a frisbee. And instead of a hole in the ground, you throw your disc into a basket. There are pars, bogeys, birdies, and all the rest. In fact, there are discs that you use in different situations. Drivers, putters, and mid-range discs are just a few of the arsenal in my disc bag! I absolutely love it!

The coolest part is that I am usually covered in sweat and breathing like I was jogging laps!

Do you find you like to take a non-traditional approach to exercise like me? Are you a total gym person? Are you struggling with adding exercise to your daily routine?

I would love to get even more ideas of things I could do that would not make me feel like I am exercising. So please post your comments.

Yes, I hate exercising, too, and I can relate to not wanting to go into places where everyone is already skinny. My apartment complex has a small gym, and the younger tenants always give me a look as if I'm an interloper.

I joined Curves, and while I liked it for a while, I quit going because I had too many other things scheduled after work, the only time I could go with their limited hours. Part rationalization, I know.

I like walking, and for a long time I did the Walk Away the Pounds Express tapes, as well as walked during my lunch hour, and I need to get back to it big-time! I've put on weight, and I need to get it off.

I need to get exercise back into my schedule, as you've done! So your blog entry struck several chords for me.


I cannot wait until it is an obsession. I want to really WANT to exercise.


Maybe this would make me able to fit exercise in. I've been thinking about the family trying geo-caching, which is basically hiking to find treasure. And maybe today I'll stop at the park with my kid and his soccer ball.


Geo Caching sounds like the coolest thing ever. I am going to have to check that out.

Finding an exercise that you like is 75% of the battle. If you are having fun then it doesn't feel like work!! Nice!

And what Kim said - Geocaching! That is some fun stuff too!


I have always had difficulty finding an exercise that I liked. I hate to sweat! So I thought about what I enjoyed doing as a child: bike riding. The breeze created by riding helps with the sweating. I also wanted to do something with my 11 year old Pomeranian and walking gives me a back ache. I bought a basket for the bike and was completely suprised to find that she sits in that basket like a princess. I find that the combination of my dog's encouragement (now she expects it) and my renewed enjoyment of cycling has helped me to stick with exercising. At first it was tough and I was real shaky, but the Pom was fearless. It's only been a few weeks and now I'm riding with ease, but still getting good exercise.


I hate exercise partially because of the pain I have to endure. I've learned to ignore it on an everyday basis, but it still aggravates the crap out of me wondering what it's like to force yourself to exercise WITHOUT the pain. I have neuropathy and some kind of muscle pain and tightening in my lower legs and ankles, and when I walk fast I feel like they are dead weight with pain. I started walking at a park near my house around the track. I walk extremely slow, because there is much less pain. I know that I have to walk faster to do a lot of good, but at least I'm doing something! I'm 38 and all of the really old people walk laps around me on the track. I feel kinda dumb, like I should wear a little sign around my neck saying, "I have neuropathy and pain!" Some people have told me to try water exercise. That would be great if there were a pool anywhere nearby. I sometimes feel like, wow, I do all this blood sugar and insulin pump and symlin and prescription medications, can't that be enough!


i have Cerebral Palsy & 1 leg is shorter so walking gives great pain. I took some clothes off an old cardioglide & hopped on. In just 1 week i was doing 10 minutes a day!!! I knew i gotta do better to be a centerfold so i bravely added 1 minute per week,then boredom set in I turned it around(i have serius music on my tv) Now I say prayers during part of my time & listen/sing/station surf also. i do 30 in the am & 15 in the pm. Ialso clean yardwork etc but i only count cardio as exercise. if i skip a day i feel fat & slo the next day until i hop on. I hope this helps


I have a hard time with exercise too. I choose to vary it between the cardioglide and the treadmill. Occasionally I skip a day, but always feel better on the days I do it My problem is that I usually drop at least 50 points after the exercise. I eat a protein and a little carb at least an hour before and then have a snack of usually cheese and a bottle of sugar free lemonade after. I only exercise for 15 minutes at a time, but two times per day. Any suggestions on how to keep from dropping so much? Would changing the snack or the pre-exercise meal help?


My favorite form of exercise is line-dancing. I ordered some music and dance in my den every day for 30 min. I'm a new diabetic and am still feeling my way through all this mess. I'm having a hard time controlling my carbs. I love potatoes and they put me into a high so fast that I have just totally given them up. In fact, after I eat my reading usually goes up to 200 no matter what I eat. I wonder if I might need to go to insulin.
