How often do you worry about diabetes complications?

As you know I’ll be switching from Medtronic to Animas when my warranty is up at the end of the year. Nothing really against Medtronic. I love my purple pump. It’s just that I originally planned to go with Animas and the Medtronic rep talked me out of it. I thought the CGMS function with Medtronic was where I wanted to be, but that reall didn’t work out. One of the reasons I’m switching to Animas is because of their relationship with Dexcom, which I liked much better.

One of the things I like about Animas (besides the super cool color screen and the remote options with the Ping) is their all-in-one infusion set. So instead of having an infusion set and manually putting it into the insertion device, the Animas device is built into the infusion set and is removed after the infusion set is inserted. I’ve had a number of sets that have gotten stuck to the side of the Quickserter, which can result in a kinked canula, which is not good. Because I’m so nervous that the site will get stuck on the side, I spend a lot of time making sure the set is just right in the Quickserter.

So I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Medtronic has a similar infusion set — and it comes in pink! Since I’m ready to re-order supplies I of course asked for this set. But this baffles me: The set with the 6 mm canula only comes with the 43 inch tubing and the set with the 9 mm canula only comes with 23 inch tubing. I use a 9 mm canula and 43 inch tubing. Why would they do that? I mean, seriously, how much sense does that make?

Anyway, I have a call into my doctor to see if I can switch to the 6 mm canula, but I know in the back of my mind that I need to stick with the 9 mm. So I’ll just have to suck it up and continue using the same infusion set I’ve been using for the last 3½ years and continue looking forward to January when I can switch.

(Update: I just heard from my old diabetic educator who said to go for it and order the 6 mm.)

curious and not to get too personal, but wonder cost difference between Medtronic and Animas....anything significant or similar?

Thx and good luck !

Just a personal choice, really. I like the color screen of Animas, I like the remote option with Animas Ping, and I like their relationship with Dexcom.
