When I see 499 on the blood glucose meter, I wonder if it's possible that the small plastic device has a heart. Maybe it's trying to soften the blow - afraid to show me a number like 500.
"At least 200 of that is from him being excited to play hockey."
This is what Susanne says when I call her with the news of the 499 from the ice rink. She might be right. It was week 1 of ice hockey and Charlie's level of excitement was bursting at the seams.
300 would have been an acceptable number being that he had just had breakfast.
It's just an hour, but it's a painful hour. For you, maybe it's your daughter's dance class or your son's karate lesson. You sit there and watch your kid and put your faith in the insulin. You can't help yourself from the horrible possibility that he'll still be 500 when the hour is over and he peels off his sweaty equipment and asks for something wicked (and not in a Boston way) like hot chocolate.
I am slightly envious of the other dads, whose biggest concern seems to be whether or not their kids' jerseys are too snug or their skates too loose. However, watching Charlie perform as he does with a blood sugar as high as his, there is no one prouder than me.
For the record, when the hour was over, he came down about 300 points and was 212.
And he had a wicked-good time.

Sitting there and keeping the faith is the hardest thing I do. I keep the faith in insulin, in his site, in his ability to spot a low, in him in general. The list goes on and on.
Keep the faith.
Hi everyone,
I conduct research on diabetes management. The data often helps emerging technologies gain greater recognition from the industry. In an effort to provide honest and impactful research, I wanted to understand how those who deal with diabetes everyday feel about different technologies. To that end, if you are dealing with insulin dependent diabetes I was hoping you would be so kind as to fill out a quick questionnaire.
As a small token of my appreciation, I will send you a $5 Starbuck’s gift certificate or a sleeve of golf balls. Please email me at diabetescare2011@gmail.com if you are interested.
Hey Carey - Crazy thing just happened with us - we have been dealing with crazy out of control highs - so we talked to CDE, Dr, changed pump setting etc. Then we opened new insulin Monday and now have uncontrolled lows. Talked to everyone again - maybe bad insulin during the highs because now we cannot get him above 60 at certain times of the day so we are back to square one. We are so tired of diabetes right now - it is making me crazy. (not to mention we lost Trev's meter somewhere at hockey last night) This week
