I'm really excited to share this blog with the whole wide world out there. It's been an insanely long time since I've seen decent blood sugar results last for more than a few hours. Overdue kind of long. So long that I was feeling like it might just never happen. But these past 24+ hours have proved otherwise...so I'm rejoicing with you.
Wednesday 8:30pm: I'm about two hours post meal and my blood sugar clocks in at 90. Italian food...amazing.
9:40pm: 114. That's without treating the 90 and just letting the Italian absorb in my system. Rejoice.
11pm: A small yogurt. No bolus.
Thursday 12am: 152. I cut my Lantus down by one unit for a 16 unit injection. I'm in the okay range for sleep, but with patterns like today, I'm not entirely comfortable.
12:30am: My stomach turns...nausea. 164. I eat a few saltine crackers and head for bed.
6:30am: 78. Not exactly where I want to be at 6 in the morning considering I had 2 more hours of sleep left. But a box of juice hits the spot and I toss and turn for the rest of my "night."
8:40am: 100. Can you say perfection?!? What a way to wake up! A giant bowl of cereal for breakfast and a giant bolus to follow. I'm preparing for a long day. Yoga presentations, class, and meetings, plus lots of writing to do.
12:10pm: I'm about three hours post breakfast now. This is usually my toughest time of the day. Plus I just had a strength intensive yoga session, which usually pushes me up a few notches. Yet...121. I've got at least three more hours until lunch so I drink half of a Dr. Pepper to ward off any lows.
2pm: Distracting morning, delayed Lantus. 27 units.
3:15pm: It really has been a long day. My stomach is growling. I feel like swinging from the rafters though. With a blood sugar like 93, who wouldn't?
7:25pm: It's about an hour after Mexican food...an attempt at lower carb on that end. I think I misjudged the bolus. Getting too aggressive. Because I'm 94 and still have 5.0 units of Humalog left. Time to drink a coke.
9:15pm: 115. Really? We're talking over 15 hours of blood sugars under 125. How is this even possible?
11:15pm: An hour or so after eating cookies and I've finally pushed above that 125 mark. To an interesting 185. I'm thirsty. No bolus though.
What a freaking miracle of a day! This is the kind of day that I yearn for. The kind that you want to write home about. The kind that you post on your Facebook status...because we're techy like that.
Unfortunately, there's a lot to this day that isn't as exciting as it seems. For instance, 94 after Mexican food with 5 units left...not okay. Or waking up at 78...also not okay. Even needing to drink a Dr. Pepper just to stay above 100...nope, not okay.
It's the pump that has me so stable though. The absorption is obviously better. And I'm able to fine tune those boluses in a way that syringes just won't let me do. The Lantus isn't hurting, obviously. But it's my post meal numbers that have really been the struggle lately.
I've got two more days using the pump for boluses only to give me a better idea where my carb ratio should be. The main thing that I can tell from this (and from another bolus only pump venture I did back in August) is that I need to change my typical Humalog injection site.
Beyond that, I'll have to see what the next two days hold for me. With variables like yoga, campus walking, and more conscious eating, it's tough to say if this type of pattern will persist. If it does, only going back to syringes and being more diligent will tell me exactly what I need to know...what should my carb ratio actually be?

Lindsey, thank you for sharing your day of fabulous numbers! And this was on top of getting to eat food you enjoyed. Way cool! Shire
Hi Lindsey,
Good to hear your excitement keep on keeping on! AS always have a great day.
Dan
PS I know you can do it.
