There was a time when The Mr. and I could wear the same size pants. In fact, he put on a pair of my jeans one day and though they fit it didn't take him long to realize why they didn't feel right.
I thought we were heavy then. I'd love to be back in that size jeans. That was before kids. That was before 12 years of marriage. That was a long time ago.
When I look back 15 years ago at pictures of us I think about how skinny we looked. And though I didn't see it then, we were; especially compared to how we look now.
The Mr. has been contemplating weight loss surgery for years. We talked about it casually. We knew people who went through it. We knew the fantastic results. We knew it was a tough road.
It wasn't until recently that he really started to seriously consider it. I think part of it is because we're in a bigger city now and have access to better health-care options. Not that where we were wasn't great for what we needed then.
The Mr. isn't a snacker, doesn't really eat sweets, doesn't often graze, doesn't really eat between meals. He just eats a lot at once. And part of that mentality comes from his days as an athlete -- both as a high school football player and as a minor league football player.
He went into the process thinking he wanted a lap band, but the more we thought about it and the more information he got the more we realized that gastric bypass was the right thing for him to do.
And, it turns out that the timing was pretty good. Though he didn't have any medical problems that really pushed him into this, pre-surgery blood tests showed he had begun to develop insulin resistance.
So yesterday morning I drove him to the hospital and smiled a bit when he said, "Wow that was quick" after the anesthesiologist gave him the first "cocktail" as they wheeled him down the hall for surgery.
Dr. B said from her experience with former athletes and with people with The Mr.'s body type, she expects him to lose a lot of weight quickly. I'm excited for him, anxious for him to be home and have been inspired to try to lose a little myself despite my love affair with food.

I am considering having this myself... my Endocrinologist has been recommending it for a while now... I wish you both all the best... I would like to know how he is doing... Best of luck... Take care, Gloria
I am in the pre-surgical phase of lap band surgery and where I have to have all the physicals done and the tests. I also have to lose 5% of my weight unless my insurance calls for more. My family has gone for the family support class before I have even had my first class. What they have heard was good, except in the opinion of my spouse. He does not like the possible problems with it. I am wondering if the sleeve surgery would be better. I will discuss that with the doctor when I finally get to talk with him. The sleeve will allow the stomach to stay in tact and allow for food to go normally through the smaller stomach and not get stuck. I also would not be having to chew each mouthful thirty times.
I would love to hear from others who have had this done.
I pray all goes well for him I am 6 years post Gastric and I can't tell you how awesome I feel not to mention look. I would not change my decision it was one of the smartest choices I have made.

I had a gastric bypass 7 years ago and had no problems at all. No side effects nothing. I was 565 lbs so you would expect me to have some problems right? I did my best to keep active prior to my surgery. I went to the pool every day and at first just did 10 minutes of mild (very mild!) exercise in the pool and increased it gradually. In six months I went from 10 minutes to two hours a day. I lost 25 lbs and never changed my eating patterns. I think that is why I did so well and so did my surgeon. I will never regret having that surgery and urge anyone who is morbidly obese and has the coverage to consider it. It has changed my entire life for the better.
In Aug. 2009 I had Gastric Bypass done since then I am off all meds, no longer a Type 2 (as my ALC went from 9 to 5.4, lost 70lbs, and lost 8 inch around the waist. My wife now say I look younger then her. Would I tell people to do this? There are a number of reason for and against you have to make up your mind. For me this was the best that could happen.
I had the surgery 18 months ago. I feel soooo
much better. more energy and I feel better about myself. My husband had the surgery 6 years ago, so we help each other. Our family can't get over how little we eat. We are both very pleased with our results. Tell your hubby, good luck!! The hardest part is not being able to eat the amount we did before the surgery. But you soon learn what your body will tolerate.
HI
I'm wishing him all the best. I had a gastric bypass on 11/11/09 and I have not had to take ONE shot of insulin or one diabetic pill since! My blood sugars have been excellent. It was the best and the easiest surgery I have ever had in my life!
I hope his journey is as good as mine was/is. I went from 230 pounds when I began the journey in April of 2009 and I now weight 150 lbs as of today-2/10/10!

I had gastric bypass 8 years ago. If I had to do it again I would in a heartbeat! THIS IS NOT A MAGIC BULLET! It is a tool to help him succeed in his weight loss goals. I lost 150 lbs and have kept it off. I gain a few pounds here and there but I get in control and shed them soon after. Listen to the DR and speak to others who have had the surgery, they will be very helpful. This is a life change and the learning never stops. If you need some pointers and support you can email me at ilovecows@optonline.net. I would love to help,we all need support. Good luck and God bless.
