After several days of using relatively unused abdominal real estate for my infusion sites, I've determined that I had most likely worn out the prime spots, which resulted in some pretty horrendous blood sugar spikes. I guess I should have known it would happen.
I have tried in the past to move my sites around. I've gradually moved toward my love handles, I've moved north before, I've even tried a thigh site with less than desirable results. In fact, the results were terrible. Terrible enough that I either yanked the sites after just a few hours or went back to the tried and true spots.
Perhaps I should have been more patient. (Story of my life, right?)
So my last two infusion sites have been much higher on my abdomen than I usually prefer. I knew I had to give them a shot though because the spikes were just too much for my sanity and for my blood sugar management. Thank goodness for Dex, though, while I was going through that crap.
This morning I was pretty sure that I had a bad site when I was over 300 after a normal breakfast of half a peanut butter sandwich that usually has me coasting in under 100. Even a double check confirmed I was over 300. I was close to yanking the site when I reminded myself that I was in new territory and just needed to wait it out.
I corrected when my pump suggested I do so and tried hard to refrain from rage bolusing, but it still took a long time to come down. It wasn't until I got home from work and was calibrating Dex did I discover that the site really was good: 52 mg/dL with no symptoms. And Dex was right on, so at least I knew I had a good infusion site and a good sensor site.
My after dinner numbers have been fabulous, as well: I had a nice pregnant curve on Dex followed by a near low that was likely from a slight overbolus (I can't stay away from milk lately and had a lot at dinner, so I suppose I guessed the carbs wrong).
So, bottom line, my diagnosis is pretty much confirmed. I burned out my lower abdomen. I will have to explore more options and learn to be a little more patient while breaking in these new sites.
It feels good to have new real estate to turn to.
