Public transit in Los Angeles county is not the best in the world, but we are getting better.
I hear about people in New York that don't even need cars because they can take the train where they want to go most of the time.
The problem here is that everything is so spread out that I just do not see how I could ever utilize the Metro system, as it's called here.
But this weekend I had a fun idea planned. We finally had a Saturday with no parties, no events, and no nothing so I figured it would be a good day for an adventure!
I told the kids to get up early and get all showered and ready to go. "We're going to have an adventure day!"
I have a 15 year old son and an 11 year old daughter who both were intriged but a little worried since I can come up with some wacky things to do.
Saturday morning we drove down the Metro station and parked the car.
"And now, the adventure begins."
My son asked, "So where are we going?"
"I dunno. Let's go get all day passes and see where we end up."
"You mean we are just going to get on the train and go anywhere?" My daughter asked this with an unsure look on her face.
"Yup. We have all day and we have nowhere to be so let's go anywhere the train can take us!"
Both kids thought that was a very cool idea and let me tell you. It was a blast!
We went to Hollywood, Chinatown, Downtown Los Angeles, and walked all over the place! We just kept jumping on and off trains all day and went any which way.
At one station I said, "Let's just get on which every train comes next and see where we can go from there!"
All that walking made for a perfect BG day. I did have a low in the afternoon but we were preparred with a bunch of glucose tabs. Other than that my blood sugar was fantastic. I love it when exercise comes in such a fun package!
It was just a fun filled day of trekking all over town. But the four of us were together sightseeing, laughing, and making awesome memories.
When we finally got home my kids could not stop thanking me for the good time. I told them that their good attitudes and participation was what made it awesome.
Even Sunday night as my kids kissed me goodnight they both said, "Dad, thanks for the great day yesterday."
I paid 20 bucks total for those four all-day passes but the memories we made were priceless.
Take that amusement parks.
