I have always used my index, middle, and ring fingers to check my BG. But lately, they hurt a lot. I check my BG 8-10 times a day so those digits are covered in marks as well as just hurt when I lance them. I
have started to use my pinky to give my other fingers a rest.

So I decided to write a poem to apologize to my littlest
counter. I hope you enjoy it.

An Ode to Pinky

For so many years I let you be,

I’d choose all the others and never consider thee,

For small and slender and quiet you’ve been,

But now little pinky the other guys win.

They’re spent and they’re hurt and they’re covered in marks,

they’ve taken the most of the diabetes darts.

So now I choose you when I need to test,

To give the other 4 of my fingers a rest.

I know that my meter says “Use alternate sites”

Like my forearm or palm but it never feels right,

Plus it leaves red marks that look really bad,

So pinky I’m sorry, please don’t be so sad.

Look at this way, it’s your turn to shine,

You can help me stay steady and keep BG’s in line,

So when you give blood to keep me alive,

Give me enough so there’s no Error 5.

I wish that I didn’t have to deal with this mess,

Or at least be somewhat ambidextrous,

To be able to test on both hands would be nice,

But my left hand just can’t hold the lancing device.

I’ve used you to swear, and hold out when I sip,

Like Dr. Evil I lift you to my lower lip,

So Pinky forgive me, It’s you I adore,

Remember, you’ll always be my number 4!

Excellent !! Now I'll look at my pinky in a whole new light. Thanks for this uplifting ode to our tiniest digit. I'll be sure to use mine more often too.
