What did I do before the internet?
I used to buy the newspaper to find out what movies were showing at the theater. I would call all my friends at least once a week to see what was going on. I would have to watch the news to see what the weather was going to be like the next day. I would read the TV guide to see what TV shows were going to be on.
So much has changed.
Before the internet I had no relationships with any people with diabetes. I knew a few type 2’s but never felt like they understood what I was going through and they were always much older then I was so I felt awkward.
So now that I use the internet all day long, I have no clue how I lived without it.
One thing is for sure. The community and friends I have met online has been invaluable. There is no way to explain how important all of my PWD friends except maybe to say that you have saved my life.
Before all of these online communities and support groups on the web, I did not talk about my disease. I didn’t acknowledge it at all. I would ignore all diabetes talk and like I said, I knew not one type 1 so I just figured I was alone in this all. That did not help my care.
Now I write, read, and chat about diabetes almost daily. Sure I am not the perfect patient, as yesterday’s post proved but when it is on my mind at least I am thinking about it and I should tell you. I made an appointment to see my endo so there is some progress.
If you are not writing a blog, on twitter, or a member of the dLife online community, I hope you have support from somewhere. If not there are many places right here in cyberspace that may work for you.
Support helps like you would not believe.
