Sounds like a bad sitcom destined for cancellation, but seriously … what is up with Charlie?
He has had chronic stomach pains for weeks and we don't know what's causing it. We thought maybe he had a bug after he woke us up at 5 am last Saturday to tell us that he was about to vomit. Which he did. Once.
If it is a virus, it's the longest one ever. His blood work came back negative for Celiac disease, but Susanne's gluten-free gut tells her otherwise. The peds want to take him off dairy for a week or two to see if the issue lies there.
He has just been very un-Charlie like and I'm getting concerned. Where is the Charlie that harasses us until submission? That begs us to stay up late and devours everything on his plate? He's not eating because he feels sick when he does.
Last night we were watching a very big playoff hockey game on TV. Charlie would normally do everything in his power to stay up for the whole game. Instead, he asked if he could go to bed. It was still light out.
"I also think I'm low," he added.
And he was.
The lows have been a big problem – three to five per day for the past couple of weeks. This might be a typical summer occurrence with the added activity, but the fact that he's not eating much is not helping matters. We've been gradually decreasing his basal levels across the board, but the lows keep coming.
A co-worker asked if it could be Charlie's diabetes that is causing the stomach pains.
"No," I told him confidently. "It's not the diabetes."
But as I write this I second guess myself. It can't be, right? Could a 7 year old with five plus years of diabetes under his belt develop complications that could trigger stomach pain?
No, right?
