You'll often hear parents of children with diabetes - myself included - moaning and groaning about the many classroom birthday parties that we must contend with. Seems it's every week that my wife gets a call from the nurse regarding an unexpected carpet-bombing of brownies or cake.
We deal with these situations without too much of a fuss, but still, it's yet another curve ball thrown our way.
I've read many horror stories through the years of classmates' parents who just don't get it. Or rather, parents who think they get it but really don't at all. Hard to believe, but I remember a story about one parent who distributed birthday treats to all of the kids in the class except the kid with diabetes. He thought he was doing a commendable thing in recognizing that there was a diabetic in the class and keeping the evils of sugar away from him or her.
This is not another rant from a parent of a child with diabetes. This post is to express how awesome Charlie's classmates' parents are.
There was another birthday party this morning in Charlie's class. The birthday girl's mother called the teacher in advance regarding Charlie. She wanted to make sure he wasn't left out. At the teacher's suggestion, she brought in the carb information along with cupcakes. All the while, the little girl was very concerned about Charlie.
I have to think that this alone works to educate people and debunk some of the myths.
We've also had parents call us directly, wanting to know if it was OK if they brought in something for Charlie. You parents rock!
And speaking of Charlie's teacher: Nice touch with the carbs on the back of the lollypop on Valentine's Day. You rock as well!
I just love thoughtful people.
And there's one thing I think parents of non-diabetic children and parents of children with diabetes can completely agree upon:
American Idol sorta sucks this year.
Potash out.
