As a young twenty-something, I'm very in tune with my inner Facebook(er). So I've noticed the trend of posting 25 random things about yourself, although I haven't quite given into it yet. However, I decided after this 25 random things post to create my own 25 random diabetes things.
So here's my 25 Random Things About My Life With Diabetes:
1. Diabetes is sometimes the best thing that's happened to me.
2. It's also often the worst.
3. I rarely follow any type of diabetes diet, although I'm sure it'd help my control.
4. Diabetes spawned a hatred of doctors in myself.
5. I am a walking encyclopedia of all things diabetes related (i.e. pancreas, blood sugar, kidney disease, glaucoma, etc).
6. I love spreading the wealth of knowledge that I have about this disease (and wish more people wanted to listen).
7. My diabetes is different than most people's diabetes (at least out of those that I've run into with the disease).
8. Sometimes, I'm still scared to bring my diabetes up.
9. But most of the time, I'm the first one who will tell you that "beeper" on my hip is an insulin pump or why I'm carrying around vials of drugs and syringes.
10. Hearing that my dad had type 1 was one of the worst days of my life.
11. Yet knowing that his A1c is easily below mine sparks jealousy in my heart.
12. I really can't imagine living without diabetes.
13. I'm not so sure that I'd want to sacrifice what I've gained from it.
14. Although I spend a lot of my time pushing for a cure by raising money, increasing awareness, and dealing with the bureaucracy.
15. I wish that I could know for sure if I'll pass this onto my potential kids.
16. Having my potential child diagnosed with diabetes would easily be the worst day of my life.
17. I've had two grand mal seizures and multiple black outs from going too low.
18. There is never a moment in my life where diabetes isn't in the back (or often, very front) of my train of thoughts.
19. I hate when people forget that I'm diabetic, which in turn means they forget why I might be shaking/clammy, in desperate need of juice, or in need of a meal before I go bowling with my friends.
20. I wish that people could understand the thousands of other issues that diabetes uncovers (like the fear of childbirth, the need for less stress, or weight issues).
21. Going low is sometimes like getting drunk (or so I've heard considering that I don't drink).
22. My number one reason for not drinking is diabetes. (Did you know that a low caused by alcohol cannot be brought up by glucagon?)
23. The aftermath of a horrible low feels like a hangover (again, I'm guessing here).
24. I think that diabetics around the world should all unite. After all, there are over 180 million of us.
25. As much as I hate my diabetes management, I am eternally grateful that I have access to meters, insulin, pumps, and A1c results (no matter how long it takes to get the results).
Now I'm curious, what do you have to say about diabetes?
