A month ago or so I called and spoke to a representative from Minimed. Minimed is the company that makes the insulin pump that I use. The model I have, the 722, has the ability to read and work with Minimed’s continuous glucose monitoring system.
When I spoke to the representative, she said that her company has been successful at getting my insurance company to cover the cost of the system 100%! I told her I wanted to start the process to which she said that she would get back to me.
She didn’t.
A few weeks went by and I heard nothing at all. I decided to send my rep an email upon hearing about a friend of mine who was approved for the system too. She quickly told me that she would get on it ASAP and get me answer back or have someone get in touch with me in minutes.
I did not believe her since the last time she promised to get back to me, she flaked.
Sure enough a few minutes later I received a phone call at work from a Minimed inside rep.
“Hello Mr. Simmons. I wanted to let you know that I received the prescription from your endocrinologist. We show under your benefits that it will be covered 100% which is great. We just need to submit some logs of your blood sugar readings and submit them. After that, it should be about 3-4 weeks to see your order” She said it so matter of fact that I did not know how to respond.
“Wow. That’s great. Wow. Thanks!”
When she hung up with me after getting my email address to send the logs to, I sat there staring at my screen. Did that just happen? That seemed so easy. Too easy.
I received an email almost immediately with the log I needed to fill in. I quickly grabbed my machine and wrote down all the logs for the month prior.
Seeing all the ups and downs, and I am talking 400’s to 30’s, made me realize how much I could really benefit from this system.
So now I wait. I have been reading blog posts about people with CGMS and their own thoughts which has been very helpful.
At this point, I am willing to try anything to get my blood sugar under control.
If you use a CGMS, please let me know what your thoughts are.
