National Diabetes Awareness Month is here! Yep, it's November already. My birthday is right around the corner, along with Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving. November is a busy, busy month.

But most importantly, it is Diabetes Awareness Month. Fall Walks are happening every weekend. World Diabetes Day takes place. And people advocate our disease.

On Saturday, I'll be participating in the local JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes with several friends. We raised over $450 for the walk. It's my first walk so I'm very excited to see how it works and meet all the people there.

My diabetes group on my college campus, Diabetic Echoes, will be holding several meetings to set plans in motion for next semester's events. We'll be spreading the word about the group and helping diabetics on campus get the information they need to survive and thrive in college.

World Diabetes Day will take place on November 14th around the world to raise awareness for diabetes. Lights will be lit around the globe to help the International Diabetes Foundation bring "light" to the diabetes subject (pun definitely intended here). There's even a Google petition for a blue circle growing around.

For me, November couldn't be more perfect for Diabetes Awareness Month. With Thanksgiving and my birthday all within weeks of each other, I get to find cause to celebrate this disease. I'm alive one more year. I'm thankful for counting carbs on Turkey Day (and eating all the stuffing I want). Plus, I have an entire month devoted to getting people involved in my diabetes.

Who's with me?

Hey Lindsey,

Happy Birthday to you!!! My birthday is this month too!! You're so right this is a busy, wonderful, and exciting month. November 12th is the 2 1/2 yr. anniversary of my type 2 diabetes diagnosis. It's an incredible ride, but I am so thankful for the opportunities I've been given to make the healthy changes that can be challenging, and yet so rewarding.

Thanks for the reminder of the importance of being thankful, it's greatly appreciated!1

Again, happy birthday, happy thankgiving, and hope to hear from you!

Best wishes,
Melissa

Well said, Lindsey. It's an important observance and an appropriate time to add a word of appreciation to colleagues in health care, allied professionals, family members, friends and volunteers who do all they can every day to help in the continual struggle to manage elevated blood sugar, to improve health and maintain a preferred quality of life, and to support those involved in the prevention, education, research and direct care fields.
