Over the weekend I got high. I mean sky high!

My infusion set must have been bad because no matter all the bolusing I did nothing would get my blood sugar to come down.

I woke up on Saturday morning a little high but was not too concerned. I knew I needed to change my site that morning before leaving for a two and half hour drive away. I had a meeting for a church retreat that I was to be at all day. I changed my site, took some insulin to bring my BG down and headed out.

On the way we stopped to pick up breakfast. I check my blood and was higher then I was earlier. I figured it was because of the time I disconnect from my pump to shower and bolus for breakfast and a correction for the high and move on.

An hour later I was feeling very thirsty. I checked. It was even higher! We are talking about over 500 now. I started to panic. I did not have any syringes on or else I would draw up a shot from my reservoir on the pump and try that.

I waited about 15 minutes more and checked. This time my pump did not give me a number. Just a “HI” which means it is over 600 and unreadable.

The people that were with me freaked out worse than me.

“What is wrong?” my friend asked.

“I am high.”

“I know but why? I mean what happened?”

“I dunno.”

“Well did you forget to take you insulin? Is your pump broken? Were you eating candy? I mean, something is wrong!” My friend was beginning to see the frustration diabetes loves to throw at us. He was actually starting to get angry with me.

Now was not the time.

“I have no clue.” I was not able to string a sentence much longer then 4 words. My brain was not working at all.

I remembered I kept an extra infusion set in my car. I changed it out and after 5 more tests that all came in over 600 I finally started to drop.

And I mean drop. In about an hour and a half I was at 61 eating all the sugar I could to keep my BG up. It was awful.

When I am extremely high or low I cannot answer any question that requires thought. My brain just does not work. I wish non-D folk understood that.

The problem is, they need to hear it when I cannot tell them.
