I started out at 192. I did a correction bolus and a carb bolus. The carb bolus was for four slices of pizza. I used the square bolus over 3 hours, hoping that I wouldn't end up too high.

I ate my pizza slices, enjoying every bite. By the time I finished eating, I had about two hours left on my square bolus. That should be perfect, I thought.

An hour later, I was 87. I still had almost half the insulin to deliver, so I suspended the bolus and drank a juice. I planned to check my blood sugar again within the next two hours to watch for the peak, then bolus the remaining insulin.

Two hours later, I felt the high creeping up so I bolused for 25 carbs.

An hour later, I checked my blood sugar. 121. Perfect. I still had quite a bit of active insulin on board so I ate a small snack, left my basals, and went to bed.

But this morning, I woke up at 307. Dry mouth and that fuzzy feeling in my stomach.

Since I've gotten my pump, I have had more trouble with eating pizza and other "slow release" foods than ever before. I've tried dual wave boluses, square wave boluses, normal boluses, smaller boluses, larger boluses, and on and on.

Yet I can't seem to have success with my blood sugars coming out in goal. It frustrates me that some of these foods seem to crash me within two hours and others raise my blood sugar within minutes. I guess I'll just keep trying to make it work, but I definitely won't be eating pizza anytime soon.

I often have similar experiences. I try to trust the square bolus and do not eat to raise my blood sugar unless I go below 70. It could be that the pizza would have brought you up from 87 on its own.

The trick is to test often. And maybe your square wave bolus should be for a longer time since the high came way later...

Just some thoughts! I'm trying to figure out the art of pizza eating as well :)

Oh,I too have problems with controlling my blood sugar and what I like to eat. But you need to take a serious look at what you are eating. 4 pieces of pizza!
Your insulin needs your help to work properly.
Even a healthy person that is diabetes free should not eat 4 pieces of pizza. Be honest with your health care team and let them know what you are doing. I sound like I'm preaching to the choir but you are out of control.Using portion control and the right foods are the only way to go.
Good Luck

idodiabetes- That is a good idea on not eating unless I go below 70. I'll try that next time! I think I will make my square bolus for 5 or even 6 hours next time.

beachbuns- I use portion control ALL the time. I generally do not eat over 100 carbs in a day. However, I also do not restrict myself because I am diabetic. I am 19 years old and should be able to eat 4 pieces of pizza without an issue. As long as my weight and A1c are in control, I don't find the need to limit myself on every meal. My A1c is within great range and I'm certainly not overweight. I certainly would not call myself out of control. Thanks for the input though!

Pizza is always a fun one and I usually 'remember' that dual wave bolus right when the numbers start rising.

RE: portion control. pfffft.
I will sometimes eat a WHOLE pizza...all by myself. And you know what? I'm not overweight AND I'm diabetic. There's no way I'd limit myself as long as I stay healthy and my A1C stays in the 6's.

I just had pizza on Friday . . . I did a dual-wave over 2 hours and was fine (115 at 2.5 hours and 124 at 3.5 hours), but woke up the next morning at 187. Yuck. I agree, I think I'm going to try a square over 6 or so hours next time too.

Oh, and I had 4 pieces, without the crust. Omitting the crust was not to keep the carbs down, but just because I don't particularly like the crust (unless it's thin crust pizza, then I eat the whole thing). I don't believe eating 4 slices of pizza on occasion makes you out of control AT ALL!!!! Part of the benefit of pumping is to allow you more freedom with food choices and being able to dose properly for them. It takes a bit of trial and error to figure it out at first, but I believe we'll get there. Sounds to me like you are doing everything right!

I've used a dual-wave bolus for pizza in the past. If I dial in that bolus at least 20 minutes before eating and the second "wave" hits about 45 minutes afterwards, I don't tend to crest as high.

But it's all trial and error. And fun. :P

Why not eat 4 slices of pizza??
What if I am hungry? Eat what you want, and try to figure out what it takes insuline-wise.

OUT OF CONTROL is certainly relative. I think there are a lot more wild things in life than 4 slices of pizza!! :)

But this also depends on the type of diabetes and how it is managed. People who have type 1 diabetes and carb count sometimes have more flexibility than someone with type 2 diabetes on medication or diet and exercise. This does not mean that life is easy with insulin. It's not. But perhaps healthy blood sugar WITH pizza is one of the benefits. I have invested many hours in learning how to eat pizza. SO I will have my pizza and eat it too!! Yumm!!

I do not always achieve good blood sugar control while eating pizza, but I have had "pizza sessions" where the dual wave bolus worked just right and I never went over 150. Now there's a reason to celebrate!

I think that i also need to try a 5 hour dual wave. And I can definitely relate to wanting to eat at 87, because when you know how much insulin is in you it seems the best thing to prevent lows. But I have been amazed at the power of waiting 15 minutes and seeing the trend. It's a lot of test strips, but it's always a learning experience that makes it easier next time!

Happy that we have this forum to share our experiences and ENCOURAGE each other :)

Have you been successful with the 5 hour dual wave for pizza? What percent is your immediate bolus? I have been having a hard time and need some advice.
