I've been on the pump for nine months now. There are still things that I don't know about it and still things I don't do to make it work efficiently. Overall, I'm still happy that I jumped into getting it and that I stuck with it past the initial adjustment phase.

I do miss things about multiple daily injections, like the clothes I could wear or the ease of being prepared. Mostly, I miss that I could be completely free. No tubing to worry about, no infusion sets, no reservoirs to fill.

Lately, I've been thinking more and more about taking a little break from the pump. Last night emphasized it when I disconnected for my usual shower routine. When I got out of the shower, I took a little extra time before I reconnected (usually I go about 15 minutes disconnected, last night I went 30 minutes). I loved the feel of weightlessness. No bulk tugging on my pajama shorts. No tubing getting caught as I prepared for bed. It was bliss.

Even looking in the mirror was different, better. I felt like my old self again.

So I've decided that I'm going to try taking a break from the pump. I'm not sure of the details right now, as the idea is still fresh in my mind.

I would love to develop a system where I could take a break for a day or two days even without a lot of stress. Eventually, it'd be nice to take a week off for vacations or stress relief. Even a month or so off would be great, if my A1c wouldn't climb the charts.

I need to pull out my Pumping Insulin book to see about doing all of this. I'd like to wait until I'm on it a year before I start going off, so I probably will wait until October to make any big breaks. Maybe until then, I'll just take a few hours off at a time to test the waters, so to speak.

Any advice?

Hey Lindsey...I took a break from mine 4 years ago and haven't gone back. I just liked the feeling of being just me...no tubing, no planning outfits around the pump, no getting caught on doors, no people stopping me and asking what it is...I've been doing better without it actually. I exercise more, check my blood sugar more often, eat less-to take less injections of course!! I'm sure I'll go back to it. My a1c hasn't gone above 7 the last one was a little higher than I like at 6.2 but it can be done without a pump!!
