In an effort to pry Olivia off the computer and out into the real world, I took her with me this morning to the Y. I've been going pretty religiously for a few months now but only recently discovered that I really dig swimming laps. It's rather ridiculous how much I enjoy it, actually, given my complete and utter lack of anything resembling athletic ability (or coordination, for that matter).

 

Olivia also likes to swim, so I figured I'd take her with me. She checked right before we left the house and was 171. It's five minutes to the Y, so she didn't bother checking again before getting in the water. We did about 8 laps when she said she was getting out. I asked her if she felt ok and she said she did, but she was a bit tired. I didn't think much of it, since she hasn't done any swimming since May, during gym class. I did tell her to check anyway, though. I swam off to do more laps, splashing along myopically and enjoying the feeling of gliding thru the water.

 

I was doing the back stroke and got back to the shallow end of the pool and saw, vaguely, that Olivia's face was hovering over the edge of the pool. "mumblemublemuble" I cleared the water out of my ears and said "What?"

 

"I'm 33," she repeated.

 

Well. So much for laps. We sat on the bleachers for 15 minutes, while she drank some grape juice. We talked about going low and why she thought she might have. She remembered that she went low a lot while she was doing swimming during gym (something I knew about but had forgotten).

 

So we decided tomorrow she's going to have a bowl of cereal and some sort of protein - maybe whole grain bread with peanut butter on it - and bolus for 3/4 of the carbs and see how that does. Hopefully it will help. I really like swimming and I'd like it even more if she could come with me every morning.
