One of our readers, Teresa, has some questions for the Blogabetes readers about diabetic retinopathy. Has anyone had retinopathy surgery and can share their experiences with Teresa?
"I have a question that I was unable to find an answer for, and couldn't figure out how to post a new blog. I have type 1 diabetes and have had it for over 30 years. I have retinopathy and have had many surgeries. I now have cataracts as a secondary problem of the surgeries and my doc wants to remove them, I have done some fairly extensive research on the two (retinopathy and cataracts) and have found that most articles agree that cataract surgery speeds up the process of retinopathy. Has anyone here had this surgery as a person also with retinopathy?
Does anyone know more about the complications?
- Teresa"
Any insight on your personal experience with this diabetes-related complication is much appreciated.

Hi Kerri,
I had laser surgery right before christmas for retinal detachments. My husband had the same laser surgery done twice last year. He had no bad reactions at all. I on the other hand had a very rough time. I am diabetic. But I have no idea if that had anything to do with my reaction. I am sorry I cannot respond about the question of whether or not there is a correlation between cataract surgery and the retinopathy. all I can say is that I was losing vision in my left eye. the doctor told me that if I didn't have it repaired I would go blind in that eye. He also said I might lose a little more vision if I had the prcedure done. He did the laser surgery and I did lose more vision. I surely don't want to have this surgery done again, but I also don't want the retina to totally separate.
