Bitter Sweet

Because life with diabetes isnt all bad.

Sunday Snapshots . . .

It's the last day of the long holiday weekend.  And as fun as it's been, I'm pretty wiped out from all of the socializing . . . and eating!!  So instead of going out to snap pictures today, I'm posting some of my favorites from my hard-drive. I took this picture in St. Thomas during the cruise we took to celebrate our 5th anniversary.   That was my favorite day of the whole cruise and this is

Giving Thanks

The turkey has been eaten.  The pies have been served.  The boluses (boli??) have been programmed.  The thanks has been given.  What two things am I most thankful for? The two loves of my life!!  What else am I thankful for?  Here's a not-so-serious list . . . all my yarn the fact that while my home-made ravioli were a bunt, my home-made cranberry sauce was a grand slam!  Hey, wait, I'm not

'Tis The Season

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, I suppose it's time to look ahead to Christmas and start getting into the spirit.  How do I make that happen? By indulging in my first Gingerbread Latte of the season.  It certainly won't be my last!  Some how the holiday stresses seem to lighten up when I catch a glimpse of that little gingerbread man dipping his toes into my coffee. What holiday treats do

I'm Thankful For

Happy Thanksgiving
I am thankful for a lot of things. I could name them but I decided to name a few in a video.  I am learning how to use windows movie maker; it gets easier every time.   There's one thing I wish I would've did but oh well next time.  Did I mention it's 1:00 in the morning?!?!

What Do You Mean It's Closed?

Is it bad blogging etiquette to post something on Thanksgiving?  Maybe so, but given why I need to post this today, I think you'll forgive me.Today, Thanksgiving, is the first weekday that I've NOT worked out since October 19, 2009.  Today would be the 29th weekday straight of either lifting weights or playing basketball.  Because the gym is closed, I'll reluctantly take a (well earned) day off and enjoy time with my family.  Ok, that's a lie.  I'm pleased as punch that I don't need to go exercise today (even though leg day is my favorite).  It all started with

Thanksgiving Splurges

Happy Thanksgiving!  I hope that you're all having a relaxing day.  We're celebrating at David's parents home with our family today, eating all kinds of good food.  Some from my cookbook, and some family recipes that aren't too diabetes friendly. I started a new Dexcom sensor today to see what Thanksgiving dinner does to my blood sugar.  I'm going to try to be good, but I have a feeling that I'm not going to stay perfectly on track.  Hopefully the Dexcom will help me correct any highs before they get too out of control! How about you?  Are you being good

The Scariest Health News Of The Year: Nanoparticles Damage DNA

Lost in the usual holiday media noise was the single most disturbing piece of research I have read all year. You can read the abstract here:Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles Induce DNA Damage and Genetic Instability In vivo in Mice Benedicte Trouiller et al. Cancer Research, 69, 8784, November 15, 2009. Published Online First November 3, 2009;doi: 10.1158/0008-5472.CAN-09-2496.You can read an expanded discussion of this same study here: Science Daily: Nanoparticles Used in Common Household Items Cause Genetic Damage in Mice.Nanoparticles are extremely tiny particles, which are found rarely in nature--for example in metallic ceramic glazes--but they only came into

The Factor Omitted In Paleo Theories: Parasites

Interlibrary loan sent me a copy of the book, Mummies, Diseases and Ancient Cultures recommended by a knowledgeable blog commentator, but unfortunately it turned out to be the first edition published in 1980 not the updated one from 1998. I'm using an extended ILL feature to request the newer version, but meanwhile I read through the first edition and found it fascinating.Relevant to the topic of my blog here was one theme that stood out in analysis of all the ancient bodies that had been preserved through time: Ancient people, no matter what time period they lived in or where

Rodent Research Blocks Progress In Treating Chronic Disease

A study described in last week's Science Daily points to a problem that has been troubling me about diabetes research: the way that research relies on rodent models that are built on false assumptions about the human diseases they are supposed to model. You can read about the study describing severe problems with the mouse model for Muscular Dystrophy here:Science Daily: Mice Holding Back Muscular Dystrophy Research? It explains that ... two major features of a key DMD [Duchenne muscular dystrophy] gene are present in most mammals, including humans, but are specifically absent in mice and rats, calling into question the

Does Drinking Coffee Raise Your Bloodsugar.......?

I have posted on this previously but I think it's important. I used to think that was a crazy question. Now I'm not so sure. Tony at Dsainsights posed that question a while back and I told him I thought he had lost his mind. After paying attention for quite a few months now, Im [...]

Aggressive Diabetes Therapy.....makes It Worse...HUH? Recent L.A. Times Article

As usual, I think it makes sense to look at things from many angles, and then make up your own mind........................... Aggressive measures to treat diabetics make many of them worse, studies show Rigorous treatment to bring down blood pressure and cholesterol is not beneficial and increases side effects, researchers say. Diabetes Management Software - What Would You Like In It?

Hi all! I've been trying pretty much all softwares on the market when it comes to diabetes management tools. And every time i've been let down. The reasons are too many to list here so I'll simply stick to my main question in this post: What features would you like in a software for managing your data? See, I'm building my own. Currently it allows you to - import data from bayer contour link - import data from other softwares - print data in nice charts/sheets Oh and it runs on all pl…

The Good Side Of Diabetes.

Sounds strange doesn't it, The good side of diabetes, but for me there is. I use to be a person with a history of drug abuse. I have had and lost 2 houses and a number of good jobs. After my last time I asked (from above) for help. Well the old saying "Careful what you ask for" is so true in my case. About 2-3 weeks after asking for help, I was so tried, couldn't drink enough water, etc.., I am sure we all know the story. Well after getting out of the hospital, Bang!!!! drug problem solved. Do d…

Bad Sensor Messages, Why?.

My 8 year old son Jack is T1 and has used the minimed paradigm real-tme pump with the SOF Senors and minilink transmitter for the past five weeks. We seem to have some issues with "Bad sensor" messages which results in the need to change the sensor much to often. Has anyone else experienced such issues. Any advice would be very welcome.
