Type 2 Diabetics:

You should know…

… many Type 2 Diabetics need to take insulin to better control their diabetes.

Sometimes diet and lifestyle changes are not enough. Controlling diabetes is important to avoid future health complications. Insulin along with oral anti-diabetic treatments and a healthy lifestyle can help control blood sugar in type 2 diabetics. A clinical research study is being conducted in your area to compare the effectiveness of two forms of insulin – injected and inhaled – in controlling blood sugar levels when used with other diabetes treatments. Both insulin treatments have already been approved.

If you are between the ages of 30 and 75, on 2 or more oral diabetic agents and have been a non smoker for at least 6 months, you may qualify for this study.

This study includes an initial consultation, study medication and follow up exams. Compensation for time and travel may be provided. If you are interested in learning more and taking a confidential self-screener, please visit our website at: www.theinsulinstudy.com/index.asp?c=DL

WANTED:

Research Study Volunteers

Allison Radcliffe is seeking people with Type I diabetes to take part in a research study to test how different methods of dealing with stress can improve the health and functioning of people with diabetes. Allison states, “As anyone with diabetes knows, the combination of stressful life events and the demanding daily requirements of the disease can worsen diabetes, because it is influenced by stress.”
If you are interested in learning more about this study, and possibly participating, please go to www.clas.wayne.edu/~radcliff/. If at any point you have questions, please email the research team at diabetes_research@wayne.edu.

WANTED:

Clinical Trial of SB-509 in Subjects With Diabetic Neuropathy

This study is currently recruiting patients.
Verified by Sangamo Biosciences January 2007

Sangamo Biosciences ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00406458

Purpose
The purpose of the study is to study the clinical effects of the investigational drug, SB-509 vs. placebo in patients with diabetic neuropathy.

- Condition Intervention Phase
- Diabetes Type I or II Mild to Moderate Sensori-Motor Diabetic Polyneuropathy Gene Transfer: SB-509 (VEGF Zinc-finger protein activator)
- Study Type: Interventional
- Study Design: Treatment, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo Control, Parallel Assignment, Safety/Efficacy Study
- Official Title: A Phase 2 Repeat Dosing Clinical Trial of SB-509 in Subjects With Diabetic Neuropathy
- Further study details as provided by Sangamo Biosciences:
- Primary Outcomes: Visual Analog Scale for Pain Intensity (VASPI); Total Neuropathy Score (TNS); Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV); Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST); Epidermal Nerve Fiber Density
- (ENFD); Epidermal Nerve Fiber Density Regeneration (ENFDR)

- Secondary Outcomes: Safety, Clinical Labs
- Expected Total Enrollment: 102
- Study start: November 2006; Expected completion: November 2008
- Last follow-up: September 2008; Data entry closure: October 2008
- SB-509 contains the gene (DNA-a kind of biological “blueprint”) for a protein. When a researcher injects SB-509 into your legs, the drug enters the muscle and nerve cells around the injection site and causes these cells to make a protein. This protein causes your cells to increase production of another protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which may improve the structure and function of nerves. In addition, there are changes in the levels of 28 additional proteins in your cells. These proteins function to promote the growth of cells, are structures in cells, help synthesize products, and affect immune cells, and some have unknown functions. This increase in your own VEGF proteins may protect and repair the damaged nerves caused by diabetic neuropathy.

The study doctor will test SB-509 (60 mg) and placebo. Everyone in this study will receive intramuscular (IM-directly into the muscle) injections into both legs. This will happen 3 times over about 4 months. Two out of every 3 participants will receive SB-509 and 1 out of every 3 will receive placebo. You will not know, and the study doctor will not know, whether you will receive SB-509 or whether you will receive placebo.

Criteria

Key Inclusion Criteria:

  • Have a clinical diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus Type I or II for at least 12 months prior to the study.
  •  Have received a diagnosis of mild to moderate sensori-motor diabetic neuropathy from a neurologist (a doctor who specializes in disorders of the nervous system) or endocrinologist (a doctor who specializes in diabetes). This type of neuropathy is a loss of sensation and muscle function that occurs in the legs and hands in a stocking and glove distribution. Subjects with diabetic neuropathy that results in loss of sensation or muscle function in only one nerve and results in loss of nerve function of the blood vessels and causes low blood pressure, will not be eligible.

Subjects with the following are NOT eligible to participate in this study:

  • Have moderate to severe ischemic heart disease, any history of congestive heart failure or have had a myocardial infarction (heart attack) within the previous 6 months.

  •  Have a history of cancer within the past 5 years (except curable non-melanoma cancer of the skin, superficial bladder cancer in complete remission, or any other cancer that has been in complete remission for at least 5 years).
  •  Have colon polyps. If you have history of benign colonic polyps that have been removed, you must have evidence of a normal colonoscopy within the last 12 months.
  •  Require any drug that depresses your immune system (such as methotrexate, cyclophosphamide, or cyclosporine) when you receive the study drug and for 30 days afterwards.
  •  Have a known disorder that affects your immune system (such as HIV/AIDS, HBV, HCV, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, or autoimmune disorders).

Diabetic Nephropathy Study

We need people like you

According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 18.2 million people in the U.S. suffer from diabetes. Of these, it is estimated that 40% will develop diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease related to their diabetes.) While there are currently medications used to help in the treatment of the kidney disease, not all medications work well with everyone.

Today local doctors are looking for adults struggling with diabetic nephropathy to help evaluate an investigational medication for the disease. By looking for treatments that slow down the progression of diabetic nephropathy, it may someday be possible to delay the need for dialysis or transplant. You will be under no obligation to participate, and the information you submit will be held in confidence. For more information contact Thomson CenterWatch of Boston, MA at 617-856-5900.
