WANTED:
Campo Amigo Ecuador (CAE)
The heart of AYUDA’s history lies in Quito, Ecuador, where we first began our work. AYUDA volunteers will collaborate with our local counterpart in Quito, Ecuador, la Fundación Diabetes Juvenil de Ecuador (FDJE), to continue to reach out to more children with diabetes in outer provinces and carry out our national diabetes camp, Campo Amigo Ecuador. Volunteers will team up with a group of Ecuadorian youth leaders to prepare, plan, and administer our diabetes educational camping program for children and youth with type 1 diabetes.
AYUDA volunteers, staff, and local youth leaders will participate at our empowerment pre-camp, an in-depth training which prepares camp staff to be responsible mentors, educators and leaders by creating educational and activity materials, reviewing diabetes medical protocol, emergency procedures and individual responsibilities. Before camp, our volunteers will conduct grassroots provincial outreach projects and workshops in which they educate and motivate children with diabetes and their families. Finally, the culminating project is Campo Amigo Ecuador, where participants learn critical life skills to manage their diabetes and are able to socially integrate with other children just like them. For more information, please contact Danielle Ennis at ennisd@ayudainc.net..
WANTED:
Campo Amigo Bolivia (CABo)
In 2006, Ashoka Fellow Doctora Patricia Blanca attended our diabetes camp, Campo Amigo Ecuador. She was so inspired by what she saw there that she invited AYUDA to launch a program in her home country of Bolivia. Our program in Bolivia is focused on building a strong national network of youth leaders who can carry out projects on a local level. AYUDA volunteers will collaborate with our local counterparts, Fundación VIDA Plena and the National Network of Diabetic Youth, as well as a team of Bolivian youth leaders to prepare, plan, and administer both of our diabetes educational camping programs for children and youth with type 1 diabetes.
Volunteers will engage in grass-roots diabetes care strategies, train Bolivian youth leaders with diabetes at empowerment pre-camp, and conduct local outreach projects for child and family diabetes education. Finally, the culminating project is to administer both diabetes camps in La Paz and Santa Cruz, Campo Amigo Bolivia, where participants learn critical life skills to manage their diabetes and are able to socially integrate with other children just like them. For more information, please contact Danielle Ennis at ennisd@ayudainc.net..

Campo Amigo Dominicano (CADR)
AYUDA is joining up with Fundación Aprendiendo A Vivir (AAV) to create our newest diabetes youth leadership initiative. AYUDA volunteers will collaborate with AAV in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and a team of Dominican youth leaders to prepare, plan, and administer our diabetes educational camping program for children and youth with type 1 diabetes.
Our volunteers will team up with our Dominican youth leaders at an empowerment pre-camp while planning and preparing for camp in Santo Domingo. Volunteers will also conduct grassroots provincial outreach projects and workshops in which they educate and motivate children with diabetes. Finally, the culminating project is to administer our diabetes camp, Campo Amigo Dominicano, where participants learn critical life skills to manage their diabetes and are able to socially integrate with other children just like them. WANTED:
Paid Position- Summer Camp Counselor with Diabetes and/or
Insulin Pump Experience—Summer 2009
Background:
We have a 12 year old son who wears an insulin pump to manage his diabetes. (He's been pumping for 8
years, during which time he's used several different pumps). For the fourth consecutive summer, our son will
be attending a seven week sleep-away camp in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York (just north of
Saratoga Springs and Lake George). The camp is a leading camp in the U.S.-- however, it is not a diabetes
camp. We are currently looking for a full-time male who can serve as a general counselor in our son's cabin
at camp, while simultaneously serving as a "shadow" for him.
The position runs from mid-June through the third week of August (including pre-camp orientation). We
successfully filled this position the last three summers and have a lot of positive experience to share.
Our son is a keen athlete who plays competitive ice hockey, and loves basketball, baseball, etc. He tests his blood glucose levels frequently (10+ times per day) to maintain his activity level and keep good control. He determines his insulin bolus requirements via carb counting while always factoring in his activity levels.
Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate must be at least 19 years old, hardworking, and extremely responsible. The person
must enjoy working with kids, love sports, and have a desire to work at a summer camp. The person must
have knowledge of diabetes and how to manage it. A candidate that already wears an insulin pump would
be ideal (Medtronic/Minimed, Animas, Omnipod, Disetronic, or any leading brand). It is not a mandatory
requirement for the candidate to be a pump user. For example, we will consider a candidate whose regimen
includes frequent injections or a candidate with a sibling that has diabetes.
