TORONTO, June 22 (CNW) - The Canadian Diabetes Association, an affiliate of the Public Health Agency of Canada's Canadian Health Network (CHN), is proud to launch the inaugural Get Off Your Buttathon. In preparation for the event on Sunday, June 26, the Canadian Health Network is inviting the public to come down to Metro Hall today at lunchtime to learn more about Get Off Your Buttathon, take part in some demonstration activities and pick up registration forms for Sunday's event.
On hand for today's launch will be Carson Arthur, host of the popular television series "Room to Grow", who will be acting as Master of Ceremonies, ten-year-old Tressa Young, Canadian and World Champion karate medalist, and fly fishing expert Jim Wilson.
"The Canadian Diabetes Association's Get Off Your Buttathon is about placing value on physical activity and healthy eating as ways to prevent diabetes and other chronic diseases that are currently afflicting our society," says Catherine Drew, Executive Director, Canadian Health Network.
"Over two million Canadians are effected by diabetes and nine out of ten have type 2, which can be avoided by adopting a healthy lifestyle. We invite the public to come out today and experience some of the exciting activities planned for Sunday - like fly fishing and karate - that demonstrate how much fun you can have being active."
"This is our inaugural Get Off Your Buttathon event and we are very excited," adds Gary O'Connor, Area Executive Director, GTA/Central South for the Canadian Diabetes Association. "As someone living with type 2 diabetes, I know the difference being active and eating right can make in managing this disease. Type 2 diabetes is preventable and Get Off Your Buttathon is a way to help people understand its cause and learn how to take action to prevent it while having a great time."
