Results From RIO-Diabetes Trial Presented at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions in San Diego

NEW YORK, June 12 (PRNewswire) -- Results from a double-blind, placebo-controlled study presented at the 65th Annual Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in San Diego suggest that among overweight and obese patients with type 2 diabetes, those treated with rimonabant showed improvements in several cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors - reducing A1C levels, blood pressure, waist circumference, body weight and triglycerides - while increasing HDL or "good" cholesterol. The study was conducted on 1,045 patients at 151 study centers, worldwide.  Among patients treated with rimonabant, 67.9% (48% for placebo) lowered their A1C - a measure of blood sugar control - below 7 percent, which is the ADA's recommended level for reducing the risk of diabetes-related complications.
