US Olympic Skier Kris Freeman gives exclusive dLife interview; explains difference in syringes
Interview with 5-time champion who speaks on his pursuit of a medal in Torino, living with diabetes, the Austrian raids and the misconception of syringes
WESTPORT, Conn., February 21, 2006 – dLife, the leading information source for people living with diabetes, announced an unprecedented interview available immediately at www.dlife.com/krisfreeman. dLife correspondent Janis Roszler, spoke to U.S. cross-country skier Kris Freeman about his personal challenges and successes while at the Winter Olympics. In a dLife exclusive, he also spoke about the recent doping allegations against members of the Austrian ski team and the difference between the syringes he uses to stay alive and those found in a raid of the Austrians’ lodgings earlier this week.
Freeman was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2000, at the age of 20. His doctors told him that he might not be able to continue skiing. "It was a complete shock," he recalls. "I had just won my first national title—was the first junior to do it since Bill Koch—and then I have a doctor tell me that maybe I won't race anymore." Freeman defied the odds and has been able to control his diabetes, injecting himself up to six times per day. “It’s not a fun disease, and it can be a nuisance leading up to the start of a race. However, I always start my races with ideal blood sugar. I will not allow diabetes to put me at a disadvantage when I race. The disease is just one more thing I have to deal with in my preparation.”
dLife founder Howard Steinberg, who’s lived with diabetes for 37 years, stated, “This is a captivating and inspiring interview that also serves to educate about the real world we live in. We are happy that Kris took the time to explain the differences in the syringes he uses and the syringes found by the authorities near the Austrian team. Kids need to know that some people need syringes for vital, life-saving medications.”
