Daily Tips

125 tipNewly diagnosed? Here are seven steps you can take right away to start on the path to good diabetes control.

See a CDE. Make an appointment with a certified diabetes educator to get smart about your diabetes control.

Deconstruct your diet. Log your eating patterns and share the information with a registered dietitian, who can help you plan meals and make healthier food choices.

Test, don’t guess. Testing your blood glucose is the best way to learn how your body reacts to different foods, activities, and situations.

Call your insurance company. Now is a good time to make sure any new diabetes-related healthcare providers are in your network and to verify your coverage for medication and testing supplies.

Get your team together. Diabetes requires a team of specialists. Start gathering referrals for an endocrinologist, diabetes educator, registered dietitian, ophthalmologist, podiatrist, and other necessary healthcare providers.

Seek support. Find out if your local hospital has a diabetes support group, or find a virtual group online. Hearing from others who share your concerns helps.

Ask questions. Call your provider’s office if you need more information or have questions about your treatment. She’s there to help.

Bone up on your calcium facts.
