Pregnant women with pre-existing diabetes (not gestational diabetes) should have a dilated-eye examination during the first trimester of pregnancy to screen for blood vessel problems. Additional eye exams may be indicated depending on your medical history and the outcome of the initial exam. The ADA also recommends a preconception eye examination, if possible.
