Daily Tips

Vegging Out

A vegetarian diet can be compatible with diabetes if you work out a food plan with a registered dietitian experienced in both.

Talk with your RD about:

Protein. Get adequate protein—approximately 20% of daily calorie intake—in the form of soy, nuts, and beans.

Carb control. Keep an eye on your intake of starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn.

Staying balanced. An animal-free diet is not automatically good for your or your diabetes. You still need to limit the sweets and junk food, and make sure the whole foods you choose provide adequate vitamins and minerals.

Multivitamins. All vegetarians should ask their dietitian if they are a good candidate for a multivitamin supplement.

Watch out for the pizza effect
