kalimah bio Kalimah Johnson is a performance poet and activist for women and the LGBT community. She is a sexual assault/domestic violence counselor and advocate, and previously worked for the Detroit Police Department/Rape Counseling Center in Wayne County. She has been active in the women’s movement for over 10 years.

Kalimah graduated from Wayne State University and earned both a Bachelor's and Master’s degree in Social Work and currently operates a full service natural hair care salon in Detroit. She is the host of a monthly poetry series and has performed around the country for sexual assault and domestic violence agencies and coalitions around topics such as empowerment, advocacy, survival and activism. Kalimah was the recipient of the Feminist of the Year Award from the National Organization of Women. She is also the past Chair of the Women of Color Task Force/MCADSV and participates in volunteerism by providing training and workshops for organizations such as S.P.I.C.E., Detroit’s Black Pride, Interim House, My Sister's Place, Turning Point, and many colleges in the Midwest region of the United States.
