World Diabetes Day

Posted by dlifetoday on Wed, Nov 14, 2007, 09:51 AM

The International Diabetes Federation established World Diabetes Day back in 1991, but this year’s observance has a special significance – it is the first time the event will also be officially observed by the United Nations and its member countries. Today in Manhattan, thousands will form a human blue circle in front of the United Nations, walk down 1st Avenue, and then join a diabetes education rally featuring American Idol’s Elliott Yamin and other performers. This evening, the Empire State Building will be one of over 250 landmarks around the globe that will light up in blue to mark the day. dLife Medical Advisory Board member and noted endocrinologist Dr. Francine Kaufman chairs the IDF’s section on childhood and adolescent diabetes, which is the theme of this year’s World Diabetes Day campaign.

Why November 14th? It’s the birth date of Frederick Banting, one of the discoverers of insulin.

Kick Butt

Posted by dlife on Thu, Nov 16, 2006, 07:08 AM

Today is the Great American Smokeout. There's no doubt that smoking is a hard habit to break. Nicotine is arguably the most widely available, yet highly addictive and medically harmful substance in America today. An estimated 45 million adult Americans are smokers. But each year, 438,000 of these people die prematurely as a result of smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke.

Research tells us the health stakes are higher for people with diabetes. If you smoke, you're automatically doubling your risk of developing diabetic neuropathy. You're also increasing your risk of heart problems and kidney damage. And smoking has also been linked to poorer blood sugar control and increased insulin resistance.

Despite all this, roughly 25% of people living with diabetes continue to smoke. It starts with one day of saying no to tobacco. Why not make it today?

Air Travel and Insulin

Posted by dlife on Thu, Aug 10, 2006, 08:33 PM

On Thursday, August 10th, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security raised the national security level to High (Orange) for all U.S. commercial flights. In addition, new travel restrictions have been put in place – including a ban of all liquids, gels, lotions, and creams of any kind in carry-on luggage. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), all necessary medications, including insulin, are exempt from this ban. Prescription medications should be labeled as such, and the name on the label must match the name on the passenger ticket.

To ensure a smooth passage through airport security, keep insulin vials and pens in their original packaging and let security personnel know you have diabetes and are carrying insulin and testing supplies. Give yourself adequate time to get through security (as of this evening the TSA is suggesting three hours in advance of your flight) and call your airline before traveling to check on any additional restrictions that may be imposed at the carrier level.

Team Type 1

Posted by dlife on Thu, Jun 8, 2006, 10:35 AM

Over 3,000 miles in just six days. That's the distance that eight people with type 1 diabetes will be pedaling next week as they take off for the Race Across America. You can watch the action live on their photo blog. Details below in the official press release.

Team Type 1 -- Live Blog and Pictures During Race Across America Follow Team Type 1 as they race to find a cure for diabetes

ATLANTA -- On June 13th, Team Type 1, the all-diabetic cycling team, will begin their attempt to break the eight-person team record in the Race Across America as part of their national agenda to raise awareness of the growing diabetes epidemic. The public can follow the team through their live blog -- www.teamtype1.org -- where an imbedded photo-blogger will capture all the round-the-clock action of "the world's toughest race."

"We are excited and proud to be able to bring our record-breaking attempt and diabetes awareness campaign to fellow diabetics and people around the world. Hopefully, our efforts will inspire everyone to take action against the growing diabetes epidemic," says Phil Southerland, founder of Team Type 1. "The numbers are staggering -- with roughly 21 million Americans living with diabetes and an estimated 41 million pre-diabetics, diabetes is fast becoming the #1 medical problem in the United States. It's also one of the costliest," concludes Mr. Southerland.

Now in its 25th year, the Race Across America, is a 3,043-mile, non-stop bicycle race from Oceanside, Calif. to Atlantic City, NJ. The eight members of Team Type 1 aim to cover this distance in under six days at an average speed of just over 20 mph. Riders will race around the clock, switching off every 30-60 minutes in a pass-the-baton style relay. Four other teams will compete in the eight-person team division of the Race Across America. Team Type 1 is also in the process of raising $1 million for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Donation information can also be found at: www.teamtype1.org .

About Team Type 1
Team Type 1 is a fund-raising bicycle racing team composed of type-1 diabetics that is competing in the 2006 Race Across America to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Founded by Phil Southerland in 2005, Team Type 1’s long term goal is to help diabetics of all types gain better control of their diabetes through adopting a healthy lifestyle and proper glucose monitoring habits.

National Cover the Uninsured Week

Posted by dlife on Tue, May 2, 2006, 03:26 PM

Nearly 46 million Americans are living without health insurance today. May 1-5 is National Cover the Uninsured Week, a project of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The campaign aims to raise public awareness of the health insurance crisis in America and motivate Congress to work towards a solution. Some facts about the state of diabetes care among the uninsured:

  • Uninsured adults with diabetes are twice as likely to be hospitalized than their insured counterparts.
  • Uninsured adults with diabetes are 3.5 times as likely as insured adults with diabetes to have gone without any visit to a health professional in the past 12 months.
  • Among uninsured adults with diabetes, lack of insurance is associated with less glucose monitoring and fewer foot, eye, and dental exams.
  • Forty-three percent of uninsured adults with diabetes report an unmet need for prescription drugs.

Little PumpKids and Diabetes

Posted by dlife on Wed, Oct 5, 2005, 03:56 PM

Our good friends at Divabetic are spreading the word about a Halloween-themed diabetes awareness program called Little PumpKids. According to Divabetic founder Max Szadek:

"'Little PumpKids' is our newest diabetes fundraising program to educate people about diabetes and/or provide SUGAR SAVVY tips on treat-giving when people seem to need it most! Ironically, Halloween's actually the 'kick-off' for Diabetes Awareness Month in November so it does make a lot of sense from several different standpoints...We're specifically trying to raise money for The Charles Ray III Diabetes Association to fund glucose testing supplies for children living with diabetes affected by the hurricane."

DON'T LET DIABETES GROW IN THE DARK THIS HALLOWEEN

While the treats will be ‘good and plenty' this Halloween, the necessary care and caution that’s needed for millions of children who are living with diabetes won’t be. One of the 'scariest' facts recently reported about diabetes is how quickly the percentage of newly diagnosed children with type 2 diabetes has climbed from less than 5% before 1994 to between 30 and 50% in subsequent years according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As demand rises for diabetes screenings, supplies, services and support it is increasingly difficult for today’s current health care systems to keep up and help provide resources. The awareness and participation of organizations like yours has now become essential to helping maintain the welfare of our children.

DIVABETIC/DCNJ is dedicated to motivating, encouraging and supporting all people living with or affected by diabetes as well as providing additional funding for several other diabetes related charities. Halloween, ironically has become the ‘unofficial kickoff’ for National Diabetes Awareness Month in November, so the real "trick" to lowering the health risks for a child living with diabetes is by creating educational/fundraising opportunities that he or she will benefit from all year long. DIVABETIC/DCNJ’S goal is to "unmask" the common misconceptions about the disease for parents, children and the public at large, and get corporate support to ensure easy access to healthier choices for all.

Don't let a child get 'spooked' by this silent killer help keep them safe. Support middle school screening programs, glucose testing supplies and additional ‘pump therapy’ counseling by joining DIVABETIC/DCNJ’s Little PumpKids: ‘Growing Up With Diabetes’ Awareness Campaign.

Here's how your organization can participate this Halloween season:
Raise Money for Little PumpKids by:

  • Sponsoring the sale of Little PumpKids’ balloons and assorted DIVABETIC merchandise (T-shirts, stickers, greeting cards) e-mail: info@divabetic.com.
  • Refer friends and family to the DIVA SHOP at divabetic.com for 'Little PumpKids' merchandise.
  • Make a donation by check or money order (see details below).
  • Host a face painting booth and/or pumpkin sale to benefit our 'Little PumpKids' fund.

Share Knowledge with Little PumpKids by:

  • Post SUGAR SAVVY tips for treating on bulletin boards or by e-mail.
  • Staff a diabetes community resource table.

DIVABETIC/DCNJ’s Little PumpKids: Campaign specifically benefits:
  • The Diabetes Center of NJ: providing Middle School Screening Program for TYPE 2 diabetes as well as additional one-on-one support and ‘pump therapy’ counseling. For more information go to: www.solarishs.org or call: (732) 650-9207 or 1-800-991-6668.

  • The Charles Ray III Diabetes Association: providing glucose screening supplies for children living with diabetes affected by the recent hurricanes. For more information go to: www.charlesray.g12.com

  • DIVABETIC: providing ‘Bee A D.I.V.A’ diabetes coaching sessions and motivational support for children living with diabetes. For more information: www.divabetic.com

Please make checks payable to: ‘the Muhlenberg Foundation’ and send your organization's tax deductible contributions to:

    DIVABETIC/DCNJ
    c/o Muhlenberg Foundation
    Park Avenue & Randolph Road
    Plainfied, NJ 07061

Your generous gift will help us take the first step towards making Halloween sweeter for a child growing up with diabetes!
