Fight For CGM Coverage!
A continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system tests your blood glucose levels every 5 – 7 minutes throughout the day. It can be used by people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. CGM devices are changing the way some people manage their diabetes - but insurance coverage is sometimes tough to come by. If you want to join the fight for CGM insurance coverage, sign the CGM Anti-Denial Petition and let your voice be heard.

Medicare refused me also. They are so far behind the times.
Instead of Government wanting to help prevent problems, they would rather pay for Major ones down the road.
This all stems back to having a Democrat controlled Congress and Senate for 50 years.
We are still in those times, sad to say.. - At 02:01 PM on Fri, Sep 12, 2008 Debbie wrote:

I don't understand why insurance companies deny and reject most things that would be necessary and helpful to our daily health issues. In a long run would prevent many of our health issues from getting very serious and then need extensive hospital care, which causes insurance companies a lot of money. Insurance companies are practicing medicine without a license.

I learned of CGM Systems at the 2008 TCOYD (Taking Care of Your Diabetes) Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. TCOYD's Founder Dr. Steven Edelman said I would be a "Prime Candidate" for a CGM System as I have "Severe Hypoglycemic Unawareness" (I can no longer feel Low Blood Sugar Reactions coming on), but I have been "Denied" the opportunity to use this Valuable Technology as the Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA) finds this to be Unreliable and Untested Tool that will not be of any help to the Diabetic Population in Hawaii. As they (HMSA) refuse to cover these CGM Systems on either a "Short-term or Long-term" basis as they are putting company profits over the health and safety of the Diabetic Population in Hawaii. So I have no clue if I will ever be able to use a CGM system even though I have the "Motiviation" to learn how to safely and effectively use this vital new tool in the care of my Type 1 Diabetes. I am defintely willing to help make this "Vital Tool" available for all Diabetics.

I am in the process of getting my new insulin pump and gluclose monitor & sensors. I'm lucky that my Ins. Co. does cover this unit with good information from my Dr. saying that I have no low sugar symtoms and seisurs. I think if Ins. Co's. realize that with these monitors they will be paying alot less hospital payments, hopefully, they will come around.

My son is a type I diabetic and I can't imagine what incentive an insurance company would have not to pay for these devices. They can only mean better longterm health for diabetics and fewer complications that insurance companies would have to deal with later.

Why would an insurance company deny something that could prevent a person with diabetes from knowing when their sugar is elevated. As everyone knows elevated blood sugars control almost every organ inside the body and if controlled it can save these organs from disease. Please do not deny this!!!

I'm wearing a CGM and have for over 2 years. TriWest (Military Insurance) covered my original purchase after 3 denials, which my Endo and I responded to each with letters. My Endo told me in June 2008, after no coverage for sensors since Sept 2007, TriWest will cover 4 boxes of sensors each year - big deal since you need a box of 4 sensors every month. Waiting to see if they really will cover the sensors.
My CGM has been a life-saver since I have hypoglycemic unawareness after 33 years of Type 1. Also my Endo and PCP love the download graphs and data I bring to my appointments. - At 06:06 PM on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 Judith Martindale wrote:
Good luck Anthem of California. That is also my secondary insurance. My primary insurance is Medicare, or Medidoesn't care. Anyway Medicare of course denied coverage for the CGMS, so next try was with Anthem of California. Their response was that they follow Medicare's guidelines, so they won't cover it either! What a crock of bullcrap huh? Anyway good luck to you!

No matter what the dollar cost of the cgm it will still be much less in the long term than paying for care for all the diabetic complications that it could prevent. Tight bg control = better quality of life = less cost for everyone.

I'm sorry, I have to disagree with advocating A CGM for "Most" DB's of anykind..
Why? Testing 6-10x day gets the same job done and more accurately ( CGM's are not as accurate as your meter ) and it's Less Costly on both sides of the fence..However.CGM's are good for Newly diagnosed DB's while figuring out their Meal Plans , Insulin Injections, exercising, etc.. and/or For those Who have Had DB for many yrs and have developed UnAwareness to Severe Highs & Lows while Sleeping...( or others with Handicapps )
For the Vast majority? Sorry, Not Necessary..
Now When they develope the Aritifical Pancrease? The CGM working in conjunction with it? Is the Best way to go.. But that is still Yrs away..1 CGM + It's Maintenance cost for just 3 mos = the cost of 8 test strips a day for a Whole Yr..
Can we afford it? Vs Giving Test strips to those who can't afford it vs the luxuary of a CGM for a Few that can?
You decide.. and justify it if you will..
