Team Type 1 -- Live Blog and Pictures During Race Across America Follow Team Type 1 as they race to find a cure for diabetes

ATLANTA -- On June 13th, Team Type 1, the all-diabetic cycling team, will begin their attempt to break the eight-person team record in the Race Across America as part of their national agenda to raise awareness of the growing diabetes epidemic. The public can follow the team through their live blog -- www.teamtype1.org -- where an imbedded photo-blogger will capture all the round-the-clock action of "the world's toughest race."

"We are excited and proud to be able to bring our record-breaking attempt and diabetes awareness campaign to fellow diabetics and people around the world. Hopefully, our efforts will inspire everyone to take action against the growing diabetes epidemic," says Phil Southerland, founder of Team Type 1. "The numbers are staggering -- with roughly 21 million Americans living with diabetes and an estimated 41 million pre-diabetics, diabetes is fast becoming the #1 medical problem in the United States. It's also one of the costliest," concludes Mr. Southerland.

Now in its 25th year, the Race Across America, is a 3,043-mile, non-stop bicycle race from Oceanside, Calif. to Atlantic City, NJ. The eight members of Team Type 1 aim to cover this distance in under six days at an average speed of just over 20 mph. Riders will race around the clock, switching off every 30-60 minutes in a pass-the-baton style relay. Four other teams will compete in the eight-person team division of the Race Across America. Team Type 1 is also in the process of raising $1 million for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Donation information can also be found at: www.teamtype1.org .
