Doggone Amazing
The Associated Press reports that an unassuming beagle named Belle has been honored for saving the life of her owner. Kevin Weaver, who has type 1 diabetes, collapsed and went into a seizure as a result of a low blood sugar. Belle retrieved Kevin's cell phone and dialed 9-1-1 with her teeth. Both beagle and human are now doing fine.
Trained service dogs that alert their owners to hypoglycemia are actually not that rare (although canine cell phone dialing is a singularly unique skill). In 2005, dLifeTV featured a segment on Heaven Scent Paws, a facility dedicated to training diabetes service dogs. While on the set, Delta, a German Shepherd, sensed a low blood sugar in her human companion and immediately alerted both parent and child while the cameras rolled. Truly amazing to watch.

New and Improved dLifeTV
"I want more information - not just the basics."
"Your stories on 'regular' people who manage diabetes in unique ways inspire me."
"Stop jumping from topic to topic."
"Keep your guests on longer."
"My only complaint is that you aren't an hour."
You let us know, loud and clear, your praise of and problems with the first thirty episodes of dLifeTV. Because dLifeTV is for your diabetes life, we took those comments to heart and retooled the show for your viewing pleasure. When the new summer season kicks off this Sunday, June 25th, you'll see longer, more indepth reports on diabetes treatments and issues, real people with real stories, and expert interviews that dive deeply into the diabetes topics you want to know about. The only thing we haven't managed to do is expand the show to an hour....yet.

Live from ADA
dLife Today is live from Washington, D.C., as the American Diabetes Association's 66th Scientific Sessions in Washington D.C. opened the doors to the Exhibit Hall this morning. We're at booth 2339 for those of you in the area. Stop by and say hello.
After a full day of exhibit hopping and symposiums, dLife staff hosted the "dLifeTV Night of Champions" at a popular D.C. hotel. Our very own Nicole Johnson Baker and Mother Love were in attendance, as were Gary Hall, Jr. and dLife Top Ten recipient (and Super Bowl Champion) Kendall Simmons and his lovely wife Celesta. Guests were treated to a special sneak peek of the new summer dLifeTV season. A good time was had by all, and we learned quite a few things about life in the NFL from our guest of honor.

Diabetes in TV and the Movies
Say Steel Magnolias to someone with diabetes and visions of Julia Roberts (a.k.a. Shelby) spitting orange juice immediately come to mind. Diabetes has been portrayed in a wide variety of ways in the movies and on television - some painfully bad and some remarkably accurate. This Sunday on dLifeTV, Aida Turturro of The Sopranos and Dorian Gregory (Soul Train, Charmed) join us for a look at diabetes in the entertainment world - the good, the bad, and the ugly. dLifeTV airs at 7:00 PM ET on CNBC (complete air schedule here).
In the meantime, check out Amy Tenderich's newest dLife article - "Reality, TV, and Diabetes," and explore our list of movies that address diabetes.

Team Type 1
Over 3,000 miles in just six days. That's the distance that eight people with type 1 diabetes will be pedaling next week as they take off for the Race Across America. You can watch the action live on their photo blog. Details below in the official press release.
Team Type 1 -- Live Blog and Pictures During Race Across America Follow Team Type 1 as they race to find a cure for diabetes
ATLANTA -- On June 13th, Team Type 1, the all-diabetic cycling team, will begin their attempt to break the eight-person team record in the Race Across America as part of their national agenda to raise awareness of the growing diabetes epidemic. The public can follow the team through their live blog -- www.teamtype1.org -- where an imbedded photo-blogger will capture all the round-the-clock action of "the world's toughest race."
"We are excited and proud to be able to bring our record-breaking attempt and diabetes awareness campaign to fellow diabetics and people around the world. Hopefully, our efforts will inspire everyone to take action against the growing diabetes epidemic," says Phil Southerland, founder of Team Type 1. "The numbers are staggering -- with roughly 21 million Americans living with diabetes and an estimated 41 million pre-diabetics, diabetes is fast becoming the #1 medical problem in the United States. It's also one of the costliest," concludes Mr. Southerland.
Now in its 25th year, the Race Across America, is a 3,043-mile, non-stop bicycle race from Oceanside, Calif. to Atlantic City, NJ. The eight members of Team Type 1 aim to cover this distance in under six days at an average speed of just over 20 mph. Riders will race around the clock, switching off every 30-60 minutes in a pass-the-baton style relay. Four other teams will compete in the eight-person team division of the Race Across America. Team Type 1 is also in the process of raising $1 million for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Donation information can also be found at: www.teamtype1.org .
