Religious Holidays and Diabetes

October is a month of many religious holidays, from the start of Ramadan to the Jewish holy days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The fasting and foodstuffs involved with some religious observances can pose challenges for people with diabetes. Fortunately there are some good resources online to help guide you:

  • Rabbi Hirsch Meisels of Friends with Diabetes offers a series of Diabetes Guides focusing on different Jewish holidays.

  • Diabetes UK has some excellent tips on fasting at Ramadan, and Diabetes Australia has a printable guide (.pdf file) on the topic.

Jewish religion is not only a culture, it has sets of rules, and in our guides we have followed the rules based on discussions with great rabbinical leaders.

Good point Amy. Still encourage people to look at Rabbi Meisels guides, though -- they address issues like carb control and meds during certain holidays. There's also a good one on eating kosher when you have diabetes at the same link.

FYI, you are not expected to fast for Jewish holidays if you have any kind of medical condition that prohibits it (including pregnancy). God puts health before ritual in Jewish culture.
