GlucoWatch Redux?

A non-invasive, continuous blood glucose monitor that you wear on your wrist? Sounds awfully familiar. Plano, Texas-based Calisto Medical has announced the successful completion of preliminary clinical trials for the Glucoband. GlucoWatch, anyone?

As you may recall, Glucowatch developer Cygnus sold its stake in the blood glucose monitoring technology to Animas Corporation earlier this year after less-than-stellar sales of the product and a legal battle with Sankyo Pharma, former marketing and distribution partner. We'll see how Calisto avoids the technological and user-unfriendly pitfalls the GlucoWatch couldn't.

I have 2 Glucowatches and found both (version 1 and 2) to work fine. Both agreed (within about 10%) with my glucose meters. But then, my glucose meters only agree with each other within 10%. I found 3 serious negatives to using the watch. First, the consumable sensor at the underside of the watch case is glued to the the skin. The glue/adhesive gave me a rash in an exact silhouette of the watch case. Moving the watch up, down and around my arms still gave good readings but left a patchwork of red itchy watchcase silhouettes. The irritated areas were unsuitable for for mounting the case until healed. Second, under the best conditions, the sensor lasted about 12 hours in use. Third, the sensors doubled in price from $4 to $8 each. I don't know today's cost. Cost relegated the watch to a low glucose alarm during sleep. Insurance wouldn't cover any of the costs. Also, the sensors are on a "life clock" from the moment they are received. Even though refrigerated, the life is about 30 days till they won't work correctly. The whole system is in a box on the shelf along with 2 jet injectors, no longer used. Currently using a Medtronic 512 Paradigm insulin pump with integrated glucose meter and remote control ($6000, insurance paid in full). During the overlap time, between pump and watch, I had excellent control. This summer I intend to move on to a pump with it's own glucose sensor if approved by insurance. I have a 12yr old son with type I diabetes. I would really like to get a glucowatch for him. I think that it is sad that my son's physicians never mentioned this device to me. Now looking up the information on the company, they stopped selling it July 31 2007. I also found it disheatening that I only heard about this device by watching a movie on TV, where a kidnapped teenager was wearing one. Why wasn't it given more advertisement so that families could have had this option. Accu checks done the old way, is hard for a lot of children and teens to do, and remember. This device would have been a welcome aide in my son's life. Is there any other companies featuring similar devices. If so where can I find one, and purchase it.

I had a friend look all over Europ for this watch and couldn"t find it. I found it in 1999 on the commputer sold over seas due to the FDA and it was impossible to find. Its a money thing Im sure.. If it wasn"t they would allow stem cell research. Until we get rid of the money grubbers we haven"t a chance...
