Soldier Story

Posted by dlife on Mon, Jun 13, 2005, 11:50 AM

Several members of the dLife team had the opportunity to meet Staff Sargeant Mark Thompson yesterday when he stopped by the dLife booth at the 65th Annual ADA Sessions. Thompson, who lives with type 1 diabetes and wears an insulin pump, did a tour of duty in Iraq recently - facing some tough obstacles to his diabetes care and still maintaining an A1c of 6.5 percent. He also holds the unique distinction of being the inspiration behind the Staff Sargeant Mark Thompson teddy bear, complete with insulin pump and desert fatigues.

GlucoWatch Redux?

Posted by dlife on Fri, Jun 10, 2005, 01:57 PM

A non-invasive, continuous blood glucose monitor that you wear on your wrist? Sounds awfully familiar. Plano, Texas-based Calisto Medical has announced the successful completion of preliminary clinical trials for the Glucoband. GlucoWatch, anyone?

As you may recall, Glucowatch developer Cygnus sold its stake in the blood glucose monitoring technology to Animas Corporation earlier this year after less-than-stellar sales of the product and a legal battle with Sankyo Pharma, former marketing and distribution partner. We'll see how Calisto avoids the technological and user-unfriendly pitfalls the GlucoWatch couldn't.

A Visit From Jim

Posted by dlife on Tue, Jun 7, 2005, 05:15 PM

dLifeTV co-host Jim Turner dropped by the Westport, CT offices of dLife this morning on his way back from several charity golfing events, including one benefitting The Barton Center. Jim is a funny, down-to-earth guy (and we aren't just saying that because he's a co-host) that has a genuine passion for helping the cause any way he can, from fundraising to appearing at the upcoming ADA sessions in San Diego this weekend (he'll be at dLife booth 835 on Saturday afternoon if you're in the neighborhood). He's also a very busy man - his latest movie, Bewitched (with Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell) will be premiering later this month.

100% Fat

Posted by dlife on Thu, Jun 2, 2005, 04:58 PM

According to Frank Booth and Simon Lees, every U.S. child and adult will be obese by 2044 and 2058, respectively, if Americans don't cut back on their inactivity and get moving.

Frank Booth, who is a biomedical researcher with the University of Missouri-Columbia, claims that decreasing the amount of activity by less than four minutes each day can result in a person gaining one pound of fat in a year. Several recent animal studies co-authored by Booth found that insulin sensitivity significantly decreases and fat cell size increases with just 48 hours of inactivity. Read more here.
