Diabetes Type: 1
Gary Russell is the President and co-founder of Fifty50 Foods, and has had type 1 diabetes for over 35 years. Along with vice president and registered dietitian Pat Gawdun, Russell's goal has been to produce safe, high-quality products for the diabetes community, including medical supplies, accessories, and a line of low glycemic foods.
Russell began Fifty50 Foods in 1990 with only three products, but he stuck to his promise to donate 50% of his profits toward diabetes research. Within two years, Fifty50 Foods was so successful that Russell donated $15,000 worth of profits. Now, nearly 20 years later, his products are still acclaimed by buyers and he has contributed an estimated $11,000,000 toward finding a cure for diabetes. Russell jokes that when researchers do find a cure, he will not mind going out of business.
