Is the pump for you?
Your doctor may suggest that you’re a good candidate for an insulin pump, but is the pump right for you? Here are some critical factors to consider when making the pump decision.
- Cost. Pumps and pump supplies are expensive. Insurance coverage may make or break your ability to pump.
- Expertise. Are you comfortable with technology? If your VCR is still flashing 12:00, you may not feel up to the challenge of programming a pump.
- Compliance. Being on a pump requires frequent monitoring, regular infusion set changes, and a commitment to staying on top of your diabetes management 24/7.
- Connection. Aside from brief disconnects for set changes and in some cases, showering, the pump is a constant companion both day and night. Do you mind the company?
If you’re considering going on the pump, talk with your healthcare provider about the pros and cons and how the pump may fit your medical needs and lifestyle.
