Prepare for sick days while you're in the pink.
The flu, a cold, and other minor bugs can cause big problems with blood sugar control. Talk to your doctor in advance about creating a sick day plan.
Some things to consider when illness strikes:
- Take your meds. Keep taking any oral diabetes medications or insulin.You may need to adjust your dose when ill; ask your doctor what she recommends.
- Test often. Test your blood glucose levels frequently; every 3-4 hours is ideal.
- Check for ketones. Vomiting can cause dehydration and consequent high blood sugars. If your blood sugar is testing at 240 mg/dl (13.33 mmol/l) or higher, you should test your urine for ketones.
- Stock up on snacks. Have non-perishable, easy-to-prepare, and illness-friendly foods like Popsicles, soup, juice boxes
- Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of clear fluids, as dehydration can raise your blood sugar levels.
- Get help. Call your doctor immediately or go to the nearest emergency care facility if your blood sugar levels are consistently over 300 mg/dl (16.67 mmol/l) or if you start experiencing any of the signs of ketoacidosis.

I had a work dinner last night with some leadership from my office. I always find diabetes etiquette at these things to be kind of tricky. It was a four course meal, with salad, soup, entree' and dessert and coffee. There was also a selection of gluten free and non-gluten free dinner rolls. I felt way too full of questions for waitress... "Could I get my dressing on the side? How much sugar is in it?" A course later...
