The flu, a cold, and other minor bugs can cause big problems with blood sugar control. Talk to your doctor in advance about creating a sick day plan.

Some things to consider when illness strikes:

  • Take your meds. Keep taking any oral diabetes medications or insulin. You may need to adjust your dose when ill; ask your doctor what she recommends.
  • Test often. Test your blood glucose levels frequently; every 3-4 hours is ideal.
  • Check for ketones. Vomiting can cause dehydration and consequent high blood sugars. If your blood sugar is testing at 240 mg/dl (13.33 mmol/l) or higher, you should test your urine for ketones.
  • Stock up on snacks. Have non-perishable, easy-to-prepare, and illness-friendly foods like Popsicles, soup, juice boxes
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of clear fluids, as dehydration can raise your blood sugar levels.
  • Get help. Call your doctor immediately or go to the nearest emergency care facility if your blood sugar levels are consistently over 300 mg/dl (16.67 mmol/l) or if you start experiencing any of the signs of ketoacidosis.
